Were the soldiers who fought for the Confederacy traitors or just people fighting for what they believed in?

Truthfully, I have always looked up to Lee. In my eyes, they are patriots.

The issue was yeah they believed in what they were fighting for, but they were not patriots.

Similar to chairman Mao they were just following what they believed In and honestly thought it was the right thing to do

I think many believed (not all but a a large amount) in the ideals of the confederacy, but that doesn't change the fact that they are nothing but traitors.

Is both a possibility?

I agree that it could be both but they still betrayed their country.

but they still fought for what they believed in. An argument can be made for both sides. I'll have to say "both."

I believe they were fighting for what they believed in and it was not about slavery as much as it was about federal v state control. I've read many books about the civil war and they all leave me with that impression.

I absolutely do not believe slavery was right or justified in any way ever.

If they won, they would be patriots. But they lost so they're traitors. Same can be said about the founding fathers. History is written by the victor.
