President Trump and Kim Jong Un signed an agreement committing the U.S. to unspecified β€œsecurity guarantees” in exchange for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula. Do you think the document is mostly symbolic, or will lead to concrete policy changes?

Yeah, this is probably going to end up like past peace talks with NK. I.e., we give them something nice, they give something symbolic, and a year or two later NK ignores whatever the treaty was and goes back to old ways.

Here is the conservative Heritage Foundation take:

Bruce Klinger, Heritage Foundation, on Twitter: "This is very disappointing. Each of the four main points was in previous documents with NK, some in a stronger, more encompassing way. The denuke bullet is weaker than the Six Party Talks language. And no mention of CVID, verification, human rights

Here is the apolitical, foreign policy wonk take:

Ian Bremmer, Eurasia Group, on CBS: "What we have is a freeze for freeze. The North Koreans are freezing their ICBM and nuclear tests and the Americans are freezing our military exercises with the South Koreans. That's exactly the formation the Chinese asked for over the past year and we said absolutely not. ... I think the biggest win is ... it's almost inconceivable now that there's a short-term risk of military conflict."

It’s because people have trust in the institution of the president. And they take the president at his word as an honest and trustworthy man. It will take a decade to unravel the lies that he’s convinced people of.

John1 Florida
06/12/18 8:40 am

Such a go to for liberals. They really have nothing to criticize in regards to Trump. The economy is doing great, there are more jobs than there are people, black unemployment is at it's lowest in history, ISIS has been defeated, NKorea has agreed to denuclearization, etc, etc. All this in 500 days of a presidency. They just pull out the word racist and throw it around and unintentionally degrade the meaning of the word. How sad and pathetic they are.

sstein555
06/12/18 8:43 am

Economy and jobs are not trumps doing. It’s increasing at the same rate as when he started. NK has not agreed to denuclearization yet. The deal is really just a memo. ISIS also shrinking the same way as it was under obama.

Also our spending is completely out of control. What happened to fiscally responsible republicans.

And I agree that we spend way too much. When Republicans have power they don't act fiscally conservative. I highly disapprove of Congress. I highly approve of DJT. It's funny how liberals act like they care about spending when they aren't in control. That's your party's platform. "Spend more and overinflate Government".

sstein555
06/12/18 9:09 am

Yeah keep laughing. Point to something trump has done specifically. I’d laugh and leave too if I had no retort. I’m against most govt spending so we can agree there. Everything trump has done though is inflate our budget.

John1 Florida
06/12/18 9:16 am

How do tax cuts inflate spending? There's your specific example, btw. You keeping more of your money doesn't increase the deficit. The government spending money it doesn't have increases the deficit. You fix that problem by shrinking government. You don't think giving companies and corporations more freedom hasn't given way to higher wages and the creation of more jobs? You're crazy.

sstein555
06/12/18 9:19 am

He’s spending more on literally everything and cutting revenue thereby increasing deficit. I never said tax cuts equal more spending. But if you cut taxes you need to cut spending. He literally did the opposite.

sstein555
06/12/18 9:21 am

The tax cut has so far a very limited affect on the economy. Corporations are not going to spend the money they will keep it. The amount they have spent is a fraction of what they’re saving. The tax plan punishes people in high tax liberal states that drive the economy like NY and California. The long term affects of targeting economic centers could be negative.

John1 Florida
06/12/18 9:23 am

The only thing he wants to spend more on is our military and border security. He was forced into signing the bullshit Omnibus bill. Which was backed by Dems. I agree, government spending is out of control. Tax cuts do inevitably lead to a better economy and essentially more money for the government. The better the people do, the better the government does as well.

sstein555
06/12/18 9:41 am

So it doesn’t count if he didn’t want it? Military spending is the largest part of the budget increase and completely unnecessary.

BlackC

Heh? Trickle down proved it was a falsehood under Reagan . All companies is buy back their stock and layoff or underpay their workers. Already 2000 lost jobs at Carrier and Harley because of tax for the already wealthy that is permanent versus the middle class. Who will have to make up that $1.5 trillion shortfall in revenue that Trumpnik pushed for himself and his Crime Family

BlackC
06/12/18 12:11 pm

Trumpnik has yet to make a deal. Any moron can leave one. He inherited a positive trending economy but has yet to break out to GDP levels of 3-4-5 % he committed to making the tax cuts viable without hurting the middle class. With his healthcare policy , the middle class are getting crushed far offsetting an meager tax cut that isn’t permanent.

North Korea previously pledged denuclearization in 1985, 1992, 1994, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016. Each pledge was a lie.

There was never a summit between the NK dictator and an American president...this one is a little different bud.

nacho1 Logic Land
06/12/18 10:02 am

The ignorance is amazing.
NK never followed thru before with the same vanilla negotiatiors and this time even though all the variables have changed - unhinged dicatator negotiating with unhinged dictator - you expect the same results.

Notice your dates: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016. Four times in six years with Obama, Clinton and Kerry at the helm they got taken by NK - that's solid negotiating right there, no wonder they felt so confident in thier expertise in dealing with Iran

Circumstances have changed - an alpha personality is in charge of negotiations - the left insists Trump is a lying unhinged dictator and who better to deal with a lying unhinged dicatator than an unhinged.dictator? Unless of course Trump is not a lying unhinged dictator then you have some retractions to make - check CNN and NYT - they have become experts at retractions.

Squidboy Snarkapottamus
06/12/18 10:23 am

From what I’ve seen so far, nothing was agreed to in writing. No inspections, no timetables, no limits. Again....I’m hopeful....but you have to prove it to me.

One meeting does not make an agreement.
I know it is mentally impossible for Trumps detractors to give him the benefit of doubt and always question his motives but he has consistently done what he has said he was going to do so let's see what happens.
For sure the failures of the past are prominent but they were all done the same way - it's different this time and if not - we are going to bomb their facilites period - Trump has made it clear he is not handing this off to the next President - it ends one way or the other with him and that is what every other negotiation lacked - the balls to back up the threat.
