With no news from the FBI on this case after such a long period of time, I think it’s appropriate to assume something very embarrassing to that agency happened. They are likely trying to create a credible story...

That’s a big stretch. The pizza bomber suspect in Erie PA in 2003 had all sorts of buzz around him namely that it was Muslim terrorists. The ongoing investigation took awhile and people forgot about it. There was no embarrassing moments. It took them years to figure out that the guys wasn’t Muslim, in concert with Muslims, but an unwitting victim of criminal
Masterminds. So this thing happened not too long ago in the grand scheme.
