So because white people that had nothing to do with the history of where we are currently, this makes them lose rights? Seems very racist white people are discriminated against for something they didn’t do
White people are still occupying colonized land. I'm not saying white people have to return to Europe (although I certainly wouldn't stop them), but they certainly don't get to set the terms of discussion, at a bare minimum. If the colonized people (natives and blacks) don't want people flying the confederate flag, you better listen.
One why would I listen? I didn’t suppress anyone, I’m actually the native, I was born here, I didn’t steal the land. And two if we want equality ( I get we are no their yet) we need to treat people the same and people must not have different rights, it’s counter productive to day black people can fly a black live matter flag, but white people cant fly the flag they want. I don’t agree with racism or suppressing others, but you can’t say well because your white you can’t have this portion of free speech
1. You're the descendent of settlers. Settlers have unique privileges in the US, because the US is a settler colonial state.
2. If you want to eliminate the privilege that settlers experience, that requires favoring non-settlers in every way. You don't get to keep your privilege if you claim to want equality. That's absurd.
I’m white and very proud. My ancestors built the greatest nation that every stood. It welcomes all. But back to the question. Confederate flag. You’re free to fly it if you want. No one is going to take that right away. Just like the Mexican flag. They got their asses kicked too. Plus we took their land. However, If people want to fly the Mexican flag that’s OK to. But for me it’s the American flag I fly. Second to none.
I’m so crazy about freedom I even support people’s right to fly Nazi flags or ISIS flags (as long as they aren’t directly involved in perpetrating or contributing to violence). I believe as long as they don’t use force, people should be allowed to express whatever statement they want to make.
That said, I also support everyone else’s right to respond. In fact, I believe the best way to stamp out wrongheaded thinking is to allow it to be expressed and then allow society to express - to a much greater degree - how wrong it is.
No I thought I agreed with the post above it. The flag of the United States is only a symbol. If we destroyed every US flag on the planet nothing would change. Our country would still be the same.
