Should it be illegal for pregnant women to drink alcohol or smoke?
I want to say no because of personal freedom, but I've worked w/special needs kids & seen t/ugly results of fetal alcohol syndrome that left a kid so debilitated that at 5 yo, he had no clue what was going on around him.
We had story time, in which t/teacher would put their story time shirts on t/top of their heads, & t/kids were expected to pull them over their heads & put their arms in t/ sleeves, as therapy. This kid sat during t/ entire story time with t/shirt over his face because he had no clue that it was story time, or that anything was amiss.
When we took him to t/bathroom, we had to pull his pants down, & use our knee in t/center of his back to direct his aim. He didn't know what we were in t/bathroom for. He was totally checked out of life. Other than MH students, it was t/saddest case I've ever seen.
Children shouldn't be made to suffer t/idiocy of their parents in cases like this. But I struggle & go back t/other direction--if we interfere here, where will it stop?
A little wine is totally fine actually
Prohibition doesn't work
Only if the child is born with birth defects directly related to the consumption of drugs.
Then MY kids will outperform yours, get scholarships, better jobs, and generally excel in life.
Freedom. Comes at a cost, so just don't be a shitty person and do that.
Yes if it's excessive. It's child abuse.
Illegal? No. But if your kid ends up with medical issues, don't ask insurance companies or state to cover your bills.
No, it shouldn't be illegal.
Yes, they're harming another life.
Smoking yes, drinking no. Drinking excessively yes.
Why not drinking any amount of alcohol?
I've known mom's who had one glass of wine or one beer on occassion during pregnancy and while breastfeeding feeding. It's not the end of the world
As free citizens in a land touted by many to allow free choice I say No. But this freedom of choice should be tempered with some common humanity and sense. So what does our American society say we should do? Imprison, fine, castrate, legislate, etc?
No. Fetuses shouldn't have any rights until they're born and become people, so pregnant women should be able to consume any substances that the rest of the population can legally consume, regardless of the effect these substances may have on the fetus.
If you weren't 15 I would punch you in the face. But then I would lose my job.
I agree with Cole. Are you gonna punch me in the face too?
What about me? You gonna punch me? Im not 15
No, it's the fact that he is young and says things in such an asinine way.
I basically said the exact same thing in the most concise way possible in my comment above. Why didn't that enrage you? And the underlying question is: why do viewpoints that vary from your own enrage you to the point of violence? Our viewpoint is just as valid as yours, and vice verse.
I haven't read anything above his post on this thread.
All you said was freedom. Very different than what he said
Also, I've never hit anyone really. It's on my bucket list. I always want to hit stupid people
It's not different. Really.
To be clear, are you saying those with different viewpoints are "stupid people" in your eyes?
No, not everyone with a different view point is stupid. Saying a baby shouldn't have rights, now that's stupid. Being a bad driver, that's stupid.
Nobody said a baby shouldn't have rights. He specifically said fetus.
Yes words were chosen specifically by both sides
If you choose to punch strawmen in the face, by all means you are free to do so.
Again, I e never punched anyone, but I hope to one day. So many people deserve it.
Well Cole aren't you the lucky one. Taking your comment re abortion and women's rights, you made it past the dangerous months that Mom could have had your brains sucked right out of your cranium. Wow. Just think how lucky you and I have been all these years.
And a fetus is not a baby is not a fetus? What do you think the Creator of all of us would say about that?
The creator of us all doesn't give a shit about us
There's too much evil in the world for any kind of benevolent god to be involved at all
That's called people having free Will and making bad choices with it.
Why exactly wouldn't god step in to stop say Hitler? Is his free will to commit genocide better than the free will of millions of jews? And what of natural disasters like Katrina, killing thousands indiscriminately
I don't try to explain why God does or does not intercede at times. I have plenty of questions about my own personal life and why.
As for tragic events where lots of people die, yes they are tragedies, but our world would be very different if none of them never happened aa well.
Sounds like child abuse
"Hey, that's illegal, you're pregnant!"
"... I'm not pregnant..."
No, but they should do the responsible thing and control their urge to drink or smoke during the pregnancy.
