The number of houses for sale in the US is at a historic low. Is this a significant problem?

It seems like that I am buying at the right time.

Yes, but it could lead to good things too - as the article suggests.

We're feeling that crunch in the small city where I live. The place has been on a lot of "best places" lists for some years - best place to retire, best place for outdoor activities, best beer, etc. So people flock here (including me; I'm part of the problem). The university is doing well and I think the student body has increased... There's a *lot* of building going on - student housing, regular apartments & condos, and houses - but meanwhile it's gotten pretty hard to find a place to rent, let alone buy. And therefore prices have gone up. Pretty far up. Plus some of the nice outlying areas are turning into cookie-cutter-type neighborhoods instead of open fields.
