I've always hated that idea. It's basically telling the person, "Be selfless." But if you really wanted to be selfless and make a sacrifice, you'd give the person a gift AND make a donation on top of it.

The only time it would make sense is if you donated to a cause you don't care much about that the other person cares deeply about. Like donating to Greenpeace for an environmental person when you don't really care about it.

Maybe my second comment, yes. But in general I don't think it's such a stretch to say that making a donation in lieu of someone ELSE's gift is a little odd.
