A family owned Irish food restaurant is looking to expand its operations yet keep its authentic image. A Chinese woman is filing a lawsuit after being turned down for not being Irish. Who should win the case?
This was asked a few days ago with the ethnicities switched, is anyone else curious to see the difference?
Business should be allowed to do this.
Just like all the guy waiters at Hooters.
Irish. This type of discrimination is just fine with me.
Agree. Business owners should be able to hire and fire who they want.
The govt can't tell a company, "this person has to work for you" it is the company's decision.
With the Chinese lady if she's fully qualified she should get the job. You know they do have Chinese people in Ireland don't you?
English, Irish is corned beef and cabbage
Mmm, Irish nachos are sooo good
If they made the mistake of telling the person that was the reason, idk what to say. Race is a discriminatory factor. If you want all Irish workers, you have to give a better reason to turn a worker away.
I'm curious to know what kind of food there is at an Irish restaurant.
As a PRIVATE company they don't need to give a reason they did or didn't hire someone as they have the right to hire whomever they please.
I am really surprised at the results, telling an applicant that you can't work here solely because you are not the right race, is a direct violation of the EEOC. Makes me wonder why some reasons are acceptable and some aren't.
Say a law firm that has been all white for 80 years an don't want to break tradition. What is racial discrimination protection supposed to protect?
Same as when it was the other way around, although Ireland doesn't have the history of assimilation. If she was turned down because she is Chinese, she should win. If she was turned down because she doesn't speak or act Irish, Irish should win.
Kinda like "black Irish"?
No way. Are you dumb? Or just plain stupid?
They make then here with corned beef and sausage- they are really good
Fuck her. She's just looking for attention.
I'll sue the Chinese restaurants for not hiring me a white man.
But it's a private business and is trying to keep t authentic.
White people have to hire Asian people if they can do the job just like Asian people have to hire white people if they can do the job. Not hiring based on race is both illegal and wrong. Racism plain and simple.
But it should be legal
or is that English
Why is what? Why is racial discrimination illegal? Why does the law actively prevent racism from preventing people from having opportunities exactly the same as others? I don't understand your question.
That's not true, but as a family establishment they have more leeway with hiring laws. Same with an apartment under 4 units where the owner & family live there.
There are a number if Irish bars around here that also have some Irish foods on their menu- been a while since I've been to one.
I guess the way I read your statement, it sounded like you will be protected from racial discrimination depending on what race you are. And if so, isn't that in and of itself, racial discrimination?
It used to be legal, but all of the non-white people who were regularly getting screwed decided they didn't like segregation and legal racism, so now we actually have intelligent laws that actually work on behalf of the citizens of the country.
remember when this question was flipped around with the Chinese restaurant instead of an Irish one? I remember the results being a little more one sided
So my question is, why, if our goal is equality, protect only the non white?
Irish all the way!
I'm not sure Irish nachos are really traditional Irish food- green beer is, though.
Your example specifically said a law firm of only white people wanting to stay only white for that dangerous word "tradition", and asked who the law was supposed to protect. The answer there is everyone who couldn't be hired, i.e. not-white.
Maybe not, but still awesome
It's supposed to protect everyone who isn't white. That's the entire point, preventing racial discrimination.
I think that was my question.
Ah got it, thought you were talking in general.
I'm black Irish. One theory is, we are the tribe of Dan and Jewish. Another theory theory is this from the Spanish sailors washed ashore after the Spanish Armada.
The only condiment that improves Irish food is catsup!
Who they work for is subjective. Property owners have rights too, even if you don't like what they may do with them.
I was just thinking this
Why is that?
