Should we ban the killing of animals that show significant signs of near human levels of consciousness and sentience in scientific studies?
That is a funny poll question from a SOH member who believes a fetus can be destroyed at the whim of the mother.
A chimpanzee rips off a woman's face, and can't be brought back under control, perhaps death is an acceptable solution.
A fetus isn't sentient. Some animals are.
This one does say the same thing about humans.
I don’t support killing sapient animals like cetaceans, great apes, or certain types of birds. There’s some evidence that some packs of wild chimps have entered the Stone Age because the modify rocks to serve as specific tools, and pass the information down generationally.
Sentience as a standard is a slippery slope, though because humans have the tendency to anthropomorphize just about any animal we spend time with.
Yes. If what we value most about life is sentience then we have to protect other species that may be evolving to become intelligent as well.
Which is why I said “terminally ill or old”.
The opposite. We'd need to kill more of them. They're threats!/s
That would mean giving up beef and pork, so no.
That's a tough one, since most of your neighbors are carnivores.
Very mixed feelings on this. I don't really know how to put a value on lives of animals. My gut would be to say, do what you will, but try to be as humane as reasonably possible, and steer clear of more "intelligent" species unless you have a compelling reason to work on them.
I voted yes, but need clarification. Are these animals surviving in their own environment and causing no harm? Are they lab bound, terminally ill or old of age? Is there a chance that the animal’s death may result in a medical advance?
Sure, but one could say the same things for humans
That's a completely different scenario and you know it
Nope. You want to make it a different scenario. Science has never used sentience to establish an organism as Life or not.
You are just taking a stance which de-humanizes the fetus. Even this poll question is an effort to humanize other animals.
You could have stopped after the first seven words of your poll.
Yes, ban killing.
No. Animals are animals. I’m definitely against torturing animals or killing them senselessly. But I can’t see why it’d be wrong in any sense to kill an animal for food regardless of its sentience. At the end of the day they are still animals and us humans. Same reason I can’t see a moral argument for veganism or vegetarianism. I can totally see the health reasoning though. Very strong argument.
Wait, now you position is a fetus is never sentient?
Really, a non-sentient organism found on Mars will be considered Life. Your standard does not hold as scientific.
You said no animal's killed. Do you eat yours alive?
I don't want any animals being killed.
Just sliced up a fresh slab of salmon. Smoked on a cedar plank. Nice way to break vegan.
Then we wouldn’t be alone in the universe. (That we know of, of course)
Keep struggling to justify your position on homicide. The federal government is not charged to guarantee Life to all things, just humans. Don’t conflate the issue.
I'm leaning yes on this one, I think.
lab testing. I’m pretty sure it’s already illegal to kill animals like chimps and dolphins for no reason
Yes, but we can't use "life" as a definition in the case of being able to kill something or not. By that logic, you're commuting murder every time you wash your hands.
Pork probably. Beef is less likely. Cows aren't as smart as some other mammals.
I eat meat. Hamburgers, tacos, etc. It tastes too good to pass up, lmao.
If you Google "how smart are cows", you'll get a bunch of articles saying they're very smart.
No, but I'll be happy when cloned, cultured meat becomes the norm.
