DSH (C-CA) proposes Establishment of Official Relations with the Republic of China Act
That sounds nice, but you're aware of the stance of China in relation to Taiwan, right?
By recognizing Taiwan we automatically put ourselves in opposition with China.
Yea. Taiwan has been functioning as an independent country for years and it's about time we give them the respect, opportunities, and diplomatic relations the people of Taiwan deserve.
So you want to directly go against China?
Nay. The current informal relations are sufficient. There is no reason to disturb the status quo. As the common saying goes: if it's not broken, don't fix it.
We have this de facto at the moment. Stripping away the facade is a declaration of war with China
Nay. I don’t want to go to war with the PRoC
Nay, the bill is contradictory and we already do all three sections anyway
I don't think now is the appropriate time for this bill, particularly because of the political climate in East Asia. We need all the allies we can get, and aggravating big China to help little China is not worth it at this time.
Bill fails @DSH
Leaning nay, it sounds you want to let China do whatever they want
Bill ties @CajunTrooper
Do we recognize their claims?
Nay due to Section 3. The UN is useless and counterproductive.
Establishment of Official Relations with the Republic of China Act:
I. The United States of America will officially establish relations with the Republic of China
II. The United States of America will recognize the Republic of China as an independent and sovereign nation.
III. The United States of America will advocate for Taiwan in the United Nations and help in the process of Taiwan joining the UN.
Summary: This bill will establish official relations with Taiwan, and recognize it as an independent and sovereign nation.
