During the Great Depression the federal government passed the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) which paid farmers to destroy their crops in order to raise the price of food. This occurred while people were starving to death in the cities, opinions?

Wouldn't the govt buying the crops and giving the food to the hungry people work exactly the same? Not that I like that much either, but isn't that the better option?
