If you had the financial means, would you hire an architect to build a custom house or buy an existing home?
We're in the process of looking for a house now. We're having a hard time finding what we want. It would definitely be easier if we could just buy the land we want and have the house and out buildings built to what we want.
I would buy one of the wonderful old Craftsman-style bungalows in the Old Town area of Fort Collins in a nanosecond, if I could afford it. The smaller the better.
I want everything tailored to my taste
Planning permission is usually a nightmare and there isnt a lot of land left to build on in the UK. If i could have whatever i wanted id buy a nice big house in the Bavarian Alps
I love old houses.
I've done both.
One house was made to my needs of the time but wasn't as livable or marketable as it should have been. There are advantages of buying one that was made for the market instead of you now.
Of course if money were unlimited I'd build on top of a mountain on about 1,000 acres to my specifications. To hell with marketability.
