Is there a meaningful difference between a Jihad and a Crusade?

The only difference is the spelling.

Zealots wrapped in the cloak of religion are always dangerous. Imagine there's no religion...

It's funny, because Muslims and Christians worship the same God.

Don't be ridiculous. One was done for a real religion, the other one supports a false God. Heretics must die!

Both killing in the name of God, both calling the other infidel, naw, pretty much the same.

In both cases it boils down to butchery condoned by radical religious zealots.

Both are to take from the other by force so I'm going with the same.

Yer dumb- the Christian were the invaders! I read some baptist propaganda that the Muslims were the aggressors.... Uh, Europe marched on Islam, the Muslims were not moving North and west.

The crusades were simply the medieval version of today's war against terrorism. It was the natural response to islam's aggressive expansion during the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries.

This is one of the Top 5 polls I've seen on SOH since I joined! It would make a great essay question on a senior college exam final in either History or Political Science.
Brilliant poll!

Don't you know anything? The Crusades is better because it happened a long time ago. It doesn't count anymore. Statute of Hypocritical Limitations. Duh

Meh. You could say because the big Crusades were about land and not force conversion. But the force conversion happened, so then again not really.

Very similar in that neither had much to do with religion and both were mostly about money and power.

One is today and one was 800 years ago. Did the Moors invade Spain? Any records of children being beheaded?

I think the crusades were only waged against Muslims. Jihad is waged against everybody else.

Like then, those who oppose or push back against Islamic extremism are in the right and the extremist Islamists are wrong.
