Have you ever seen a solar eclipse live in person?
Yes, July 20, 1963. I was standing on top of a mountain on Mt Desert Island just off the coast of Maine, at a point where the eclipse was total, and the last point it passed on the US continent. On the next mountain over were gathered scientists
from around the country. (Actually I was with scientists too, but they were all biologists - I was spending the summer at a research institute.) It was a cloudy day & it didn't look as if we were going to see anything much, but the clouds
parted in time for us to see the whole show. It's something you don't forget, watching the everything grow somewhat dark. Somewhere I have some photographic slides of that day.
