Why are our schools so much more dangerous? (since the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, there have been an average of 1.37 school shootings for each school week, and ANOTHER yesterday here in Portland ) .

I think the media plays a huge part in this. Sensationalizing it and making the shooter (in)famous has a certain lure for some kids. And some adults.

It all leads to poor parenting.

Blame the NRA all you want, it just makes you look like a fool. Citizens have always had a right to own firearms, since the 18th century.

It doesn't matter if it's every week. The problem is that we do not hold people responsible for their actions in this country. Until we do that, none of these problems will change.

Any place that has a "no guns" sign is defenseless. There has never been a mass shooting at a shooting range. Why? Because everybody else would kill you the second they realized what you were doing.

If you research the figure in your poll, you'd find that the Bloomberg Goons cooked the books to get at that number of incidents.

Hard to hold someone responsible, accountable, liable, or any-other-able when the shooter is dead. I believe that was IDs point.

I would consider an "accidental discharge" at a school as a fairly egregious event. Why would anyone need to have a weapon in a condition where an accidental discharge is even a possibility in a school?

If you Google it, other sites have details on the other 59 incidents. Accidental discharges, suicides, police chases, gang violence. Definite concerns, but not the same as a jackass shooting up an elementary school.

Yeah, but most of these shooters take their own life (or simply don't plan to come back). Accountability is not the issue...at least with the shooters.

I think less people would be killed if the act of killing had to be done with a knife. Stabbing someone to death is not as easy as it sounds.

Is this counting actual mass shootings or are we just counting every incident with a gun?

It's not the case. Just more Bloomberg propaganda.

The implication of the question is that school shootings are more common since sandy hook. I don't think that's the case. Just more publicized.

Except that shooters almost always have a personal tie to the target and aren't "selecting" a less defensible locale.

Gun incidents in the US are FAR more prevalent than cherry picking something globally.

How are we not holding murders accountable? We lock up more people than the rest of the world combined. Are these criminals doing unaccounted for time. It's not like we are known for looking the other way. We even put people in prison for no reason

The responsibility is the issue. As a society, we do not hold these people as responsible for their actions as we should. Until we change, they will not. Expect many more shootings in the future. Here are some excuses that seem to be acceptable:

Number of school shootings similar to Reynolds HS since Sandy Hook? 15. www.cnn.com/2014/06/11/us/school-shootings-cnn-number/ You start to do research......gang violence, suicides, accidental discharges, police chases.....

Huge numbers of mayors walked away from Bloomberg's group once they found out it was nothing but an anti-gun crusade. He's formed two more groups since, and this propaganda comes from his "mothers against..." group.

We do lock up more people than any other country. Most of them are locked up for nonviolent crimes. In Shazam's poll, he asked whether mental illness excuses murder. I believe it does not and it's an excuse. people that ill should be removed from..

I think any incident of gun violence at a school rates counting. 'Only' two died yesterday at the school here in Portland. One victim and the shooter, both freshmen boys. Not mass, but still heartbreaking.

29 people were stabbed to death at a Chinese train station. And in England concealed knife carry can get you 5 years in prison.

Thx for that, it's a start. I would be curious to know how many of those incidents resulted in death or injury and how many were accidental discharges. Would also like to know how many were an actual shooter with intent to harm.

Even including the suicide deaths, you have far greater odds of dying in a car accident on the way to or from school than you do dying from a shooting on campus.

Even if teachers carry weapons in schools, they should be well secured (just like police when their weapons are holstered). Unless they are drawing a weapon to respond to an active shooter situation, there should never be an accidental discharge.

Totally agree. I don't watch the local evening news at 10:00pm for that very reason. 9/10 stories are murder, murder, death, murder, abuse, death, death, assault, corruption. It must sell if that's what's being programmed. Pathetic, really.
