Bowe, the released Taliban prisoner has yet to speak to his parents. He spent 5 years speaking Pashtun and has forgotten how to speak English! If you were in a foreign country where no English was spoken could you forget the language?
I've lived in a foreign country and only spoken Spanish long term. I had no problems speaking English to the customs man when I arrived in the Miami airport. I think Sgt. Bergdahl is putting on to avoid the inevitable.
When he got to the helicopter he allegedly wrote "sp?" for special forces...asking if that's who the guys were. Don't tell me he forgot English....he didn't.
While I did not not have direct experience, kanadajin3, a Canadian that has been living in Japan for a few years, has started to speak 'engrish' due to her constantly being around Japanese, so I think it's possible.
