Would you be willing to accept higher gas prices temporarily if it helps bring down the Iranian regime?

How soon Democrats forget that gas prices were at $5 a gallon even without a military operation.

But hey. That was caused by a Democrat so it doesn’t really count…

Bringing down a regime to be replaced by what?

We brought down a democratically elected Iranian government back in 1953 and look what happened since then! The United States and Great Britain are responsible for most of the Middle East problems we have today!

It is relatively easy to bring down a regime. It is just as likely that the new regime will be worse than the old regime.

Regime change has been proven to be a costly and failed policy for the United States.

Gas prices hit $5 because there was an extreme demand surge as lockdowns ended and the pandemic economy ended. It sucked, and was really hard on everyone, but there was a reason for it.

How funny republicans are willing to bend over and take expensive gas because Trump was the one to make it happen.

What I wouldn't support is $200billion going to this little pet project when it could make citizens lives materially better.

No … why should I care about another country’s politics/government? That is up to the country’s citizens to decide - not Netanyahu and Trump.
I don’t want our money over there.
I don’t want our military over there.
I don’t want the MAGA Cult running OUR country. Bunch of lying losers.

I understand that. And I know Iranians personally--great people. It's still not our job. We shouldn't be there.

This question is a false dichotomy. We're not going to be able to bring down that regime without serious commitment on our part.

If you want regime change in Iran, you're going to have to invade and occupy, probably for a decade or longer. This war CANNOT be won from the air. If you want to invade and occupy, you're going to have to do some very unpleasant things that most Americans won't tolerate or vote for. I'm talking mobilizing the entire Guard and reserves, a military draft, wartime rationing, et cetera.

Then your answer is no. Regimes are in place until they are not. No one thought Egypt would fall during the Arab Spring, but it did without outside invasion. It is up to the people of Iran to ultimately fight for their freedom, if they don't, we shouldn't either.

This isn't against Iran or Iranians, its against a nuclear armed theocratic dictatorship who has been threatening nuclear action against Israel and the West. Its about free access through the Straight of Hormuz a key waterway to the Persian Gulf that supplies the world with natural resources. Its about a free Iranian people, not being controlled by an extremist religious group. 80% of Iran does not support the violent government and if you have been listening to American-Iranians who left the country during the Diaspora in the 70s and 80s when that extremist regime took over, this is a good thing that needs to happen. This is about taking out one of Russias strategic partnerships in its conquest to physically take out the Western countries of Europe. Trump is the wrong president for the job but at the right time. We might not get another chance at this.

Fully agree. Sustainable regime change is rarely successful when initiated by outside forces. In any event, Iran is 7,000 miles away. There's no logical reason for us to be anywhere near that region.

With all the stupid infrastructure damage throughout the Middle East it will likely be higher for 5-10 years or possibly longer. And inflation will follow the same likely. No thought on issues on behalf of this destructive administration. They care about no one except themselves…

Exactly. I would add that regime change in general is rarely successful when initiated by outside actors. The only sustainable regime change has to come from the people IN that country.

Didn't they say that would take them decades? Didn't he say starting a war instead of negotiating is weak?

I don't need to debate this, because Trump's own statements (and not from long ago) already have.

Not sure what it's worth, but I had an Iranian friend who immigrated to the US. He said, roughly, "I hate my country's government, but 'death to [something]' is just a common phrase. It's like our 'fuck you.'"

Take it how you will, but he said it's been poorly translated for years.

We shouldn’t have let the mullahs control Iran for the last 47 years. It’s long past time for them to go, if I have to pay $1 more per gallon of gas for a couple months, that’s well worth the price.

I am against any theocracy, particularly those that fake democratic processes to favor in practice a specific religion and directly derive their laws and justice from particular religious writings; not just Iran.

Should we then also go after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Yemen, Qatar, Pakistan, etc, and in fact, most of the Middle East, including Israel?

I said “yes” but that would require we really care to stick around a while to help Iran establish a more stable government. Nation building is a long term commitment and not one I think Trump or most Americans care to do frankly.

I don’t think America will forget the censorship and social media bans of the left or Bidens vaccine mandates or calls for vaccine ids. The left isn’t strong at all this midterms. NATO just backed Trump this week in Iran. It would be an empty impeachment but the left already has 2 of them recently so one more won’t hurt

Almost anything is better than the current theocratic regime that funds terror and murder across the world. It couldn't really get more extreme.

I was listening to a military podcast I follow. They had a couple of staff officers on it. One was Army. The other navy it USMC. Can't remember which. Anyhow, they were talking about how there were plans drawn up around desert storm on how to take control of Kharg island, and that is the marines are given that mission, they have an "off the shelf mission plan" to do so.

I find that really scary. If we take that, we're in for the long long haul.

Just reread what you wrote. My first thought was "I wonder if the reason they've been so successful is they're using"off the shelf" plans drawn up by Gen Powell et al in the early 90s?

CUD coolbeans. All is that has been achieved except for the regime change and both Trump and Bibi have said it's not a goal.

So.... Why are we still there? The straits will open the day after we leave.

So.... time to scadaddle?
