Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the very first American pope. How do you feel about this selection?

Don’t know anything about him, but I’m sure that will forward Catholicism in America.

I’m glad that the process was concluded quickly and (apparently) without a lot of infighting.

Just read about him, he’s to the left of Francis.
Not good for the future of the Catholic Church. You can’t compromise reality into a fantasy lens of the left.

Point is, POTUS should not use his position to sell Presidential favors for personal enrichment, which is what Trump does when he promotes his businesses from behind the POTUS sealed lectern, when he uses his hotels and resorts as venues for official events, or sells time with himself to the highest bidders on $Trump branded coins / crypto currency. Not to mention the very many felons sold to his cause he pardoned as well at the end of his first term.

I believe Trump shouldn't use public office to gain wealth other than his salary which he donates.

I believe Obama, Clinton and Biden should not have become multi millionaires from public service.

Do you agree with both those statements or jjust one?

Bill was already in office when I moved to the US. I was not a citizen just yet, when Bush got elected. If I could I might have voted for him, and then bitterly regretted it in hindsight, when that whole war on terror fiasco unfolded. I voted for Obama, and would do it again. I guess he and his wife made money out of the Presidency with books and talks post presidency, like all of them do (well, those who make it to that time, anyway…). I do not recall Bush nor Obama looking like salesmen for personal profit anytime during their terms, unlike Trump. Correct me if I missed something. Mrs Clinton was unpalatable to me for various reasons, probably not the same as yours, so neither her nor Trump got my vote in 2016. And again in 2020 neither Trump nor Biden got my vote, as I went for a write in, just like at the last elections, in protest of a fundamentally inadequate, caricatural dual party system that only props up terrible candidates for a travesty of a choice!

Trump losing to the pandemic makes good sense, in the sort of business he is in. That had nothing to do with presidency.

Biden gaining $2M at end of presidency, on an estate worth $7M is not improbable either, in the period of time he was in office. I know my properties gained significant value in that same time. Does not look like related to presidential influence peddling.

IDK much about Hunter. I had little interest in that side of the story, because of the petty aspects of his dealings.

Parents do help theirs children, and I can relate to that, up to a point.

When that becomes as flagrant and huge as the billions involved in Trump’s son in law’s dealings with the Saudis, to pushing nepotism to the point of hiring their own family members to key positions at the white-house, or also, to a much more modest, nonetheless concerning level, to Hunter’s dealings with that Chinese investment firm or Burisma, then I turn away in disgust.

Nacho suggests he lost wealth during his first term. True, but not directly related to his presidency, and perhaps indirectly self-inflicted, since he failed to diligently address the critical first few weeks, as more concerned with the outlook and the stock market than border control, tests, and epidemiologists’ advices for early mitigation, such as social distance, mask usage, etc.

All people involved in hotels, resorts, casinos, convention centers, social venues, restaurants kind of businesses got hit badly, not just Trump.

vitriol
May 08, 2:30 pm

Only later did he finally acknowledge the seriousness of the pandemic, and facilitate the access to test kits, and the pace acceleration on vaccine research and delivery, which sure was the right thing to do. But any leader in his right might would have done that from the get go.

Another fact: Just like Trump, I lost a ton of money during the pandemic and because of it, and like Trump, I made it Ll back and beyond, after the pandemic. Nothing to do with his commitment to the service of the country … nor mine … nor anyone else’s. Bringing this up in the context of a discussion about who gets richer or poorer as a direct result of their holding govt office is a fallacy. Trump recovered just fine and well beyond, and is posed to benefit significantly more, with the shady influence peddling schemes he is running right now.

Trump lost money as a public servant before the pandemic.

Your feeble attempt at rationalizing the massive wealth gains of Dem politicians from their "public service" is laughable.

In 2016, Trump was worth $3.7 billion, according to Forbes. That dropped to $3.1 billion in 2017 and held there for 2018 and 2019. But this year Trump’s net worth dropped to $2.5 billion.

www.cnn.com/2020/09/09/politics/forbes-400-donald-trump-wealth?cid=ios_app

In March 2016, Forbes estimated his net worth at $4.5 billion. A year later, shortly after his inauguration, they lowered it by $1 billion, and by the end of his presidential term, they had subtracted yet another $1 billion.

Were the losses in 2017- 2018- 2019 pandemic related @vitriol

vitriol

Trump never lost money *because* of his public service other than having less time to mount scams such as Trump university or other such vaporware based on his “brand”, or as a consequence of his own mismanagement of the early weeks of the pandemic that did cost us all, proportionally to our savings, property valuations, etc.

The very 2020 article you mentioned also reads:
“Why the dip in Trump’s fortune? The coronavirus pandemic.”

Let alone the wild swings of fortune listed in the wikipedia articles where they expose tax tricks and fraud, fraudulent real estate and other “business” dealings, etc. Trump has been master of all his life long. The presidency is only another opportunity for him to bring his art of swindling - and associated risks - to the next level.

vitriol
Today: 9:55 am

His losses in 2017-2019 were due to property valuation changes, independent from his presidency. He himself valued properties wildly differently, depending on whether the data should be presented to the IRS, to investors, or to banks as guarantee for loans, which also characterizes his crookedness.
