Usually when they die, but with phones and computers it’s been to upgrade. Our toaster oven has become a protester, refusing to work until I thumb it repeatedly. Our relatively new LG fridge groans often and loudly, but we pay it no mind.
Until the last few years, we had never bought a new tv (other than the 12 inch black and white I bought from a friend for $25 for hubby for one of our 1st Christmases! đ )
We have picked up things like that off the side of the road where people were throwing them away! đ Lots of things we have, I can’t even remember where they came from….handed down from other people.
We just in the last few years bought our first set of new living room furniture, also. We had gotten others as hand me downs or at thrift stores. We’ve bought lots of things at yard sales, too.
We did recently buy a new Keurig to take the place of the one that died on us, that hubby had bought at a thrift store for $8! đ
And we’ve bought new microwaves when the old ones died.
We’ve even had used mattresses that were given to us or that we got from yard sales. Our phones and iPads are replaced when we no longer have the memory to keep it going.
They aren’t making the time any easier to change on these things. Once I learn how to set the clock I’m keeping it! And btw, you can unplug a desktop computer for weeks and it’ll keep the time, why hasn’t this technology passed on to my microwave? One thunderstorm and it takes forever to get all the appliances saying the same damn time! Get with it appliance designers!
Had an 8 year old Vizio TV developed large vertical green lines on the screen , lived with until it got annoying to watch movies. Finally bought a new Sony TV when it went on sale at Costco
I upgraded my old washer and dryer because I thought they wouldn’t last. They were already 20 years old. I got a pair of LG from Costco. They didn’t last 5 years. Garbage. I wish I still had my old ones.
Usually, I buy new items when the old ones die. I’m getting my first new cell phone (iPhone) before this one dies. I took my late husband’s old cell phones in the past when he upgraded. I think he bought me a new flip phone years ago. Then I had his old Razer and two Blackberries. When I started with iPhones, they were new. I replaced when dying up until now. My daughter talked me into it.
I’ve never bought a new TV unless it had to be replaced except for putting a TV in a room that had not had one before.
Appliances: Replace when dead or dying.
Cars: Same as appliances. Replaced one in the seventies to get better gas mileage. May replace the one I have now due to absurd repair costs.
I dont think ive ever got something just as an upgrade, ever. My last phone got replaced when i dropped it in just the right way to disable half the screen. The one before that got replaced when it was no longer able to install newer apps because it's version of android couldnt be updated anymore. My computer is 11 years old, my laptop is 8 years old, I still use Cathode ray tube TVs, and my primary car is from 2002. I couldnt care less about having new flashy things. Saving money feels better than having a flatscreen ever could.
