Does rape culture exist? Why do you think it is or isn't?

Just because people get raped doesn't mean we live in a culture of rape or a culture that promotes rape.

Every culture has rape. That will never go away.

Young women are often treated as sexual toys for young men, and rated by how hot they are. (See the latest Time magazine on porn.) When they are treated as things, not people, it becomes easy to take what one can from them.

Not in the US. In prisons possibly, or other countries, like South Africa.

Not in the US. In the Middle East, yes.

No, but we can have a culture that is apathetic towards date rape and stigmatizes victims of rape. Only 3% of rapists being punished in any form is unacceptable to me (rainn.org/news-room/97-of-every-100-rapists-receive-no-punishment)

I hate to say this but the 97 statistic is completely made up because you can't prove that any of the 97 happened. I do agree that it is likely that many to most rapes go unreported, but it's hard to prove.

Yes. Recognition that most rapes are committed by people known to the victim still appears limited and focus on prevention is often centered on female behavior and not about the concept of consent. And rapists rarely face jail time.

It appears to exist in Muslim culture...especially against non-Muslim women.

I would refute this by saying that almost all rape allegations can completely destroy someone's life. Regardless of the evidence or lack there of. With the burden of proof lying on the prosecution, rape is a difficult thing to pin down.

Just because most don't face jail time doesn't inherently mean we live in a society that encourages rape.

I completely agree. However, rape is exceedingly difficult to convict. Because it's easy to leave little to no biological evidence and even then a shower can get rid of what's left. And even if you did have evidence it could devolve into a he said she said. Where no one budges. It's terrible, but that's how a lot of those cases go. However, that could be helped with more aid to the victims.

Don't take me the wrong way. I agree. It's disgusting, but rape by nature is very hard to prove

Men have had no Fathers to teach them to never put your hands on a woman. Walk or run away. Do not touch unless you have a relationship that allows touch, ever.

No, not in civilized countries, i.e. Western countries and Japan.
