Taking politics out of the equation, do you believe that the United States could support and fund a program ensuring access to three healthy meals a day for every person in the U.S.? This isn't about "should" but only "could."

The F-35 program alone could have funded that for a few years lol

A lot less than it's costing to run medicaid programs for undernourished people and a whole lot less that we spend on "defense" and foreign aid. What do you think?

I think that if we cut wasteful spending and stopped some of the dumb research projects we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on, we could definitely do it.

Instead they take it for military R&D, over priced politicians, research grants that are garbage, foreign aid, etc... Which would you rather have if you could choose?

Exactly!!! It's a could question. Not a should question. Sheesh.

Oh, okay. I'm on board now. I thought you were suggesting that hunger wasn't an issue here.

It said ensuring access. Meaning that if people wanted it. I didn't say that it would be a total replacement for all.

The question was "could." The answer is, yes. Should is another question and so is cost. There's no way to know the cost. Also, there are charities that do this type of work. I don't support higher taxes but a more efficient use or even reduction in

Of course we can't. We can't even support the programs we have now.

And what is "defense?" You think our military does nothing?

Only in America are there poor fat people. Every other countries poor are skinny and malnourished. Obviously we don't have a problem feeding the poor.

That would take research Rons. Not everyone needs assistance and not everyone wants it.

The taxes we do pay and having them go for things that matter to this country instead of to everyone else seems like a good approach.

Yes, it could. It would need some shuffling of funds, to be sure, and just how to go about doing this is a different discussion, but yes, it could be done.

Of course. The amount of food that we as a country throw away is obscene. We should pass a law similar to the one France just adopted which makes it illegal for supermarkets to throw away edible food.

Yes. It's a huge (pun intended) problem. We have a very strange society where the rich eat healthy low fat food and are in shape. But the poor have lots of low quality calories. Obese children in poverty are common. I just saw an NPR piece about this

You still have to run a medicaid program on top of that. how much will it cost to feed 320 million X 3 X 365 X $ = ?
It did say feed all americas three squares.

I believe so. I saw something last night about the waste of food on tv bec of the ridiculous standards for food's look and how much goes straight from the farm to the landfill even though it's 100% edible. Really messed up.

We're the only people with any sense here. Too many people saying stuff about fat poor people and how much it would help when it would be a communist policy that wrecks the economy.

It's easy to think "we have stuff over here and people that need stuff over there so let's just bring them together." But that's not how things work. Subsidizing the poor (just like anything else) leads to a surplus, as the war on welfare has shown.

That is,a lot of money to feed every person in the US 3 meals everyday. And if all people are being fed for free how are we paying for the food and the workforce to do that.

Just an estimate. About 17 million Americans are food insecure or somewhat malnourished, times $5 dollars per 3 meals times 365. It could cost more depending on how many households it's given to.

If it's could be done to feed the US population how much do you think it will cost the taxpayer??
