Do teenagers cut themselves because they want attention or because it makes them feel better (though I don't know how that would work)?
Also, be very careful with questions and comments that trivialize mental illness.
People, especially young people, will refuse to seek help because they don't want to be labeled negatively.
There's no shame for visiting a doctor for s broken
...bone and there shouldn't be any shame for visiting a doctor for mental health issues.
It can easily be both. It can be an externalization of internal pain and a cry for help.
Most of the girls that I know who did that covered their arms so people couldn't see...suggesting that they didn't want the attention. In my experience, they did it to feel better. Kind of an emotional release along with the physical.
I don't know that either is wholly accurate - and it depends on the individual in question. My understanding is that a significant percentage of cutting occurs due to high levels of stress and anxiety. It becomes a means of relieving the stress by
providing a kind of release for the stress. Basically, the teen relieves the anxiety by causing physical pain to replace the psychological pain (teens are far from the only ones who use physical pain as a mechanism to alleviate psychological pain).
So the second answer seems to come closest.
Shared. Hope that's ok. I should have asked first.
I feel like it's a mixture of both. You cut to release the pain, and so that someone might understand you're really crying for help. I haven't ever done it so I could entirely wrong
More like shitty coping mechanisms
Both. But simply dismissing it as a "cry for attention" doesn't give the problem it's due justice.
This has been my experience as well. The several I've known who have been cutters all kept it hidden too. All have described it similarly; a better pain than the emotional pain they're in, a way to forget about their emotional pain, a release, etc.
Actually you're right. The physical pain releases the emotional pain.
Yeo..."release" is the word I always heard.
From my rudimentary understanding it seems to be about feeling in control.
I have a friend that used to cut and it was for attention because they feel like none gives them enough attention
Sick kids DUH
Obviously they need help.
A friends niece is a cutter. But based on my conversations with my friend, she clearly needed help coping with life and daily issues. Cutting is to release pain but I think it's because they don't know how to deal any other way!
But it took a while to get to the cutting point, parents just overlooked the mood swings as teen angst! The signs (wanting help) were there, but overlooked bc they just thought she was moody (which most teens are to some degree).
Nah, I think its attention. I don't see why else they'd do it. It doesn't solve the problem.
Had a friend who used to cut himself with broken glass. Can't say he did it on purpose. He just liked the scars.
Oops. He did it on purpose. I just don't think it was to gain attention.
it's not all teens you should fix that
Obviously. You should read the comments of my "have you blocked any SOH users" poll. It's very relevant.
I didn't say it was all teens.
Except job denial
I don't get it either. Weird stuff.
It's a cry for attention because they need help!
